Born in the same spirit of fun and exploration as The Geek Group, Heelys have made the rags-to-riches journey from a prototype rolling through Huntington Beach into an international phenomenon sweeping through the fashion and extreme sporting worlds. The sneakers with the little wheel that lead to big air have taken the nation by storm, but that doesn’t mean the Heelys company has forgotten about the brains their helmets protect.
It may be hard to imagine what Heelys have to do with science, but thanks to their generous sponsorship of The Geek Group and its events, the plethora of Heelys’ educational uses can finally be showcased. What controls every movement we make, whether it’s walking down the street or dropping a Kobayashi in the half pipe? Physics, of course! During open houses and other demonstration events, The Geek Group is able to utilize Heelys unique design to surprise guests with up-close and relevant examples of Newton’s laws of motion and, once the ramp is completed, simple harmonic motion. These lessons can be taken from the classroom to the skate park effortlessly and allow athletes to understand the deeper scientific nuances of their sport.
