How You Can Help

Donation Guidelines

The Geek Group gladly accepts donations of science, technology, and arts related equipment and supplies. While working equipment is preferred, we are able to make moderate repairs to most donations.

Before sending or dropping off a donation, please contact our offices at (269) 744-2372 or via email at info@thegeekgroup.org to ensure that we are prepared to receive your contribution in an efficient and timely fashion. We are a federally licensed 501(c)3 non-profit organization and can supply you with a donation receipt for tax purposes.

Equipment and Supplies

We are a federally licensed 501(c)3 non-profit organization and can supply you with a donation receipt for tax purposes.

Specific guidelines for various types of equipment are as follows.

Computers and Accessories

The Geek Group accepts a wide range of computers, computer parts, and accessories, often regardless of their age or capacity. Racks, stands, and computer room flooring are also appreciated.

PLEASE NOTE: WE CANNOT RETRIEVE ANY DATA FROM DONATED COMPUTERS. All donated computer hard drives are immediately erased and rewritten several times to ensure the data is completely irretrievable. We are required by law to erase and rewrite the hard drives of EVERY donated machine. Please make MULTIPLE backup copies of your files BEFORE donating the computer to us.

If your business requires a receipt for data destruction in compliance with FDSS, DoD or HIPAA regulations, please request one and we'll be happy to supply it.

Laboratory Equipment

Please contact us with details if you're planning to donate laboratory equipment. We will accept most broken equipment; in order to facilitate repairs, however, please give us as much of the equipment's history as you know.

LASERs, Optics, and Related Equipment
The Geek Group accepts all manner of LASERs and optics gear, as well as related stands, benches, safety equipment, etc. If you plan to donate a full LASER system, please include all hoses, fittings, and cables.

Robotics Equipment

We accept all manner of robotics equipment, from pick and place systems to large materials handling robots. If you're planning to donate a larger system, please contact us at least three business days prior to delivery to ensure we have the staff and equipment necessary to unload.

Office Furnishings
Shelving, tables, office furniture, office equipment, and supplies are all gratefully accepted.

Art & Drama Supplies

Traditional art supplies, such as paint, brushes, fabric, film stock, etc., are always welcome in new or gently used condition. The drama department is trying to build a script library for the public and would be happy to receive script or drama anthologies from any era or genre.

Items we DO NOT ACCEPT for Donation

Items The Geek Group WILL NOT accept for donation include:

Stolen or illegally obtained property
Fire-damaged equipment
Explosives (of certain types; please contact our chemistry department for a list)
Biohazardous materials
14 or 15-inch computer monitors
Nonworking computer monitors

The Geek Group will also accept other types of equipment and supplies; please contact our office for details regarding other items.

Financial donations of any size are greatly appreciated as The Geek Group strives to bring high-quality, low-cost science and technology education to the public. You can make a general donation via Paypal to avalon@thegeekgroup.org.
